The Touch washbasin, created by designers Bulent Unal and Elif Gunes, breaks away from traditional two-use washbasins with its unique form and innovative functionality. This sculptural washbasin not only adds a visually striking element to wet spaces but also symbolizes the idea of togetherness in every sense.
Unal and Gunes drew inspiration from the powerful emotions experienced when two people come together. The Touch washbasin represents the feeling of touching and being together, with its prestigious appearance and aesthetic appeal. It transforms the concept of a sink from a purely functional item into an artistic object.
The strength of the Touch washbasin lies in its ability to accommodate the use of two adults in one basin. Its ergonomic design allows for a comfortable and intimate experience. The sculptural form of the washbasin symbolizes the bond and passion between two people, while also showcasing a unique and functional approach to design.
The Touch washbasin is made using Fine Fire Clay (FFC) ceramic, which is then glazed with a non-stick glaze, resulting in a high-performance ceramic. This combination of materials and craftsmanship ensures durability and a smooth, easy-to-clean surface.
With dimensions of 1250mm in length, 450mm in depth, and 150mm in height, the Touch washbasin offers ample space for two people to comfortably use together. The packaging is designed to be environmentally friendly, optimizing the use of materials.
Designed to create a different bathroom experience, the Touch washbasin reflects the passion and desire for touch between couples. Its flowing and sculptural form seamlessly blends aesthetics with functionality. The integrated feet on the back of the sinks allow them to stand independently, adding to the overall design.
The Touch washbasin project started in May 2021 in Ankara, with extensive research into consumer preferences and design trends. The designers aimed to create a washbasin that not only met functional requirements but also conveyed emotions and meanings through its form.
One of the challenges faced during the design process was incorporating semiotics into the design. Semiotics, the study of signs and symbols, played a crucial role in determining the colors, forms, and light-shadow effects used in the Touch washbasin. The designers aimed to trigger subconscious patterns and create the desired emotional response in the target audience.
The Touch washbasin has been recognized for its outstanding design and functionality. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Bathroom Furniture and Sanitary Ware Design category in 2022. This prestigious award acknowledges the well-designed, practical, and innovative nature of the Touch washbasin, which meets professional and industrial requirements.
With its unique form, innovative functionality, and symbolic representation of togetherness, the Touch washbasin is a testament to the power of design in enhancing everyday experiences.
